A good book

In the last few weeks Little Bear has started to become a real book-worm. Are we building a little Einstein or a Nobel Laureate? He started light, grabbing the pizza menus posted through the door and making a swipe for People Magazine (not sure how it ended up in our house?). Then moving onto the more complex literature with some trips to the library, he started getting hooked on how a little boy called Max was trying to find his ball, or the adventures of Spot the Dog.

Lately few of his toys can bring him as much excitement as discovering that Mamma, Pappa, and the puppy he never had are hiding behind little flaps he can pull... again, and again...

Little Legs

Something Little Bear has done since before he was born is kick. He kicked like crazy in the womb, keeping his mum up at night. He kicked the day he was born (and did little else). When eating, at least 1 little leg is waving around. When he lies on his back to play, he's kicking. If you want to make him giggle, just shake his legs around.

He'll kick you in the stomach (or the eye as happened this morning) if you lean over him, and role over and push his body forward with yet more kicks. Trying to get him to take a nap is essentially a struggle to stop him kicking for long enough for him fall asleep. And we shouldn't go into the dangers of changing a nappy...

So if you're expecting and the baby's kicking a lot, be aware he might carry on when he's out...

Baby not broken, back about to be

The baby is still in one piece following a week of dad in charge. Hooray! It's been a pretty active week as well, despite promising myself I'd take it easy. We've met friends, been to the cinema, library, baby group and a weaning class, and finished with visiting Heaver Castle somewhere in 'the country' (outside of London). Although this outburst of daily effort may have cost me my back.

To future dads, get your back in shape before the baby arrives. You'll need it in shape more than ever before, but you'll have less time than before to ever get it into shape.

Thinking Little Bear would do well to get exposed to some culture, my sister and I took him to Heaver Castle, where Anne Boleyn grew up. Forced to leave the pushchair outside, I strapped him to my chest in the baby-carrier. Moments after entering this ten century old house, he fell asleep. Apparently not a history lover...  But he did love the baby-carrier...

cooler than his parents

My wife and I have very different attitudes to sunlight. I like it. She hates it. Unfortunately, being a winter baby, the Little Bear seems to be following his mother's opinion. Every time he gets exposed to light outside during the day (even in the shade) his little eye squint up and he'll start waving his tiny hands around in protest.

Unlike during his first month or two, now when it's bedtime it's still light outside, and even with only a small crack of light coming through the curtains, he still complains and only sleeps with a melodramatic pose: his arm covering his eyes with his nose pointing upwards in protest. He can only cope going outside for more than a few minutes if we put a hand over his eyes or pull the hood fully over the pushchair. Even then, his normally happy face looks quite grumpy from the rays.
Some people have said that we should 'just get him use to it' which sounds pretty cruel. 'Here little guy who only discovered his foot last week, I'll expose you to prolonged discomfort you can't escape from so that you can toughen up for the world...'. A slippery slope.
Instead, I did some searching and found these awesome sunglasses.
Have not seen such a cool baby. He puts his daddy to shame. His spirits on outdoor trips were lifted, we don't have to cover his little face up every time we leave the house, and on top of all this, he looks like a dude.

Surprisingly they also stay on his head most of the time, although he occasionally removes them to give them a lick [giving us a guilty look when we catch him doing it]. So apparently they're tasty to.
I would highly recommend sunnies for any winter babies.

I'm Dave, dad of Little Bear. Also known as 'Pappa' to the little man as we try and bring out his Swedish roots

My wife and I are sharing the troubles and joys of bringing up Little Bear equally. This is about my half of the time being responsible for not breaking the baby
